Trump Arrives in Beijing to Red-Carpet Welcome as Louisiana Watches for Energy and Trade Wins

President Donald Trump landed in China Wednesday evening ahead of high-stakes talks with Xi Jinping, with potential new deals on LNG, agriculture, and tariffs that could boost Louisiana’s ports and economy.

President Donald Trump touched down in Beijing Wednesday evening to a lavish red-carpet welcome as he prepares for a two-day summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping that could have major implications for Louisiana’s economy.

Air Force One landed at Beijing Capital International Airport around 7:50 p.m. local time. Trump was greeted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, a military honor guard, and hundreds of children waving American and Chinese flags in a carefully choreographed arrival ceremony.

The visit marks Trump’s first trip to China as president in nearly a decade. Formal meetings with Xi are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, May 14-15.

High Hopes for Louisiana

Louisiana stands to benefit significantly if the summit produces new trade commitments — particularly in energy and agriculture, two pillars of the state’s economy.

Trump is traveling with a high-powered business delegation that includes Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The group is expected to push for expanded Chinese purchases of American goods and eased trade barriers.

For Louisiana, the biggest potential wins include:

  • Increased LNG exports — Louisiana is one of America’s top producers of liquefied natural gas. A new deal could revive Chinese purchases that dropped sharply during recent trade tensions.

  • Agricultural exports — Louisiana farmers and the Port of New Orleans could see renewed demand for soybeans, corn, poultry, and other products if China commits to larger purchases.

  • Port activity — The Port of Baton Rouge and Port of South Louisiana, two of the busiest in the nation, would likely see increased cargo volume if trade flows improve.

“Any meaningful increase in Chinese demand for U.S. energy and farm products would be a direct boost to Louisiana jobs and revenue,” said a local trade analyst. “Our ports and coastal energy infrastructure are built for this kind of volume.”

Broader Economic Context

The summit comes at a sensitive time. Gas prices in Baton Rouge and across Louisiana have climbed above $4 in many areas, and the ongoing conflict involving Iran has added pressure to global energy markets. A successful outcome in Beijing could help stabilize trade and eventually ease some of those costs.

Trump has made clear he wants China to buy more American products, especially in agriculture and energy. Previous comments from the White House have signaled expectations of “deliverables” on trade during the visit.

What to Watch With Trump in Beijing

While the red-carpet arrival signals a desire for positive optics, the real substance begins Thursday. Key issues expected on the table include tariff relief, energy purchases, technology and AI cooperation, and the war in Iran.

For Louisiana, the most important outcomes will be any specific commitments on LNG and agricultural exports. Even modest increases could translate into stronger farm income, more port activity, and renewed confidence in the state’s energy sector.

As one Baton Rouge business leader put it: “When the world’s two largest economies talk, Louisiana feels it — for better or worse.”
