GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MI — Sunday morning worship turned into a scene of horror as a gunman opened fire inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, killing two and injuring several others.
Authorities say the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of Burton, Michigan, drove his truck through the church’s front doors around 10:25 a.m., then began shooting. Witnesses described chaos, screams, and smoke as Sanford reportedly set parts of the building on fire.
The attack comes less than 24 hours after the death of LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson, though no connection has been confirmed.
Sanford was killed in a shootout with police. His motive remains unclear.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the violence “unacceptable,” while LDS officials mourned the loss and emphasized that houses of worship must remain sanctuaries of peace.
WecuMedia Statement: We stand with the victims, the survivors, and the shaken community of Grand Blanc. Violence in sacred spaces is not just criminal—it’s a rupture in the soul of civil society.
